If you're looking for a laptop to take on the move but one that works like your PC, you can select tablet PC laptops that even have rotating and removable keyboards. Tablet PCs generally refer to laptops or mobile computers that are slate-shaped, which are also usually equipped with a graphics tablet or touchscreen, or screen hybrid so that you can operate it with a digital pen or a stylus, or a finger, rather than using a mouse or a keyboard.
These types of laptops make it easier to interact with computers on the go. They can be practically used in places where regular notebooks are unwieldy or impractical, or don't give the user the functionality you need. The tablet PC was brought out by Microsoft in 2001. It's defined as a computer that is pen-enabled, with hardware that conforms to Microsoft's specifications. A Microsoft tablet PC will run Windows XP Tablet PC Edition or some derivative of that original system. Microsoft has recently leaked information that it may be releasing a new tablet PC laptop called a Courier tablet, and it will run on a newer operating system. The more recent “leaks” have indicated that the new Courier will run a Windows 7 based system.
There are various tablet PC laptop concept models that have been unveiled in the last twenty or so years. Some communicate by using finger-tip touchscreens, and others will require a stylus made specifically for that laptop. The market for this type of laptop has been rising and falling since their introduction, but the desire in the marketplace right now appears high. Tablet PC laptops are especially valuable in hospitals, and other areas where they need the technology and the durability. Microsoft has made some decisions internally that may have made the tablet PC laptop less popular due to various operating system support problems.
Microsoft's lack of support for tablet PC's has led to the consumer's turn to tablet PC's with Linux based operating systems. Some of these systems are installed after the tablet has been released. Linux systems appear to run very effectively on Linux and other Unix variations of the tablet PC.
Tablet PC's known as slate computers look like writing slates, and they don't have a dedicated keyboard. When you need to input text, you will rely on an active digitizer that recognizes handwriting, by touching the screen with a stylus or your fingertip. You can also use an external keyboard that is attached by a USB or wireless connection.
This type of tablet PC generally incorporates a small LCD screen, and they are popular in fields like education and health care, or what the manufacturers term as “vertical markets”. If these laptops are used out in the field, they have rugged specifications that allow them to resist drop and vibration damage, as well as humidity and heat. These rugged models often come without moving parts that could make them less durable. Convertible tablet PC laptops have a base with a keyboard attached, and they resemble more modern laptops, although they are larger and heavier than slates.
